Flam line in Norway
Four of the most scenic rail journeys’ in Europe are in Scandinavia. On most people’s list is the Flåmsbana or Flam line in Norway which connects the Bergen line at Myrdal with the fjord 863 metres below. The Bergen line is the highest mainline rail service in Norway and transverses the Hardangervidda plateau at 1,237 metres above sea/fjord level. These are both extremely popular lines and bookings are essential.
The rauma line: from Dombås to Åndalsnes
The Rauma line from Dombås to Åndalsnes is not only known for its spectacular scenery but also for its engineering feats, in particular it’s 103 bridges, numerous tunnels and its two horseshoe curves and a 655 metre elevation drop. This is not to be missed.
Inlandsbanan
For a line less travelled the 1288 km Inlandsbanan in Sweden is both scenic, historic and has a sense of adventure. The whole line is open in summer but only part of it can be achieved in winter. As it takes a number of days to complete the journey,Scandinavian Vacations has packages available that include both travel and hotel accommodation booked in advance. Allegro train: from Helsinki to St. Petersburg
Regular High-speed rail services exist throughout Sweden, Finland and a four times daily 3.5 hour high-speed Allegro train between Helsinki and St Petersburg. This brings Russia\’s cultural centre, to the doorstep of your Scandinavian vacation. With venues such as the Mariinsky Theatre hosting opera and ballet, and the State Russian Museum showcasing Russian art, from Orthodox icon paintings to Kandinsky works.
